How to Play Sudoku: Rules, Tips, and a Simple Strategy

how to play sudoku · 6 min read

Sudoku is a logic puzzle, not a maths test. Every row, column, and 3×3 box must contain the numbers 1 to 9 exactly once. The best way to start is to scan calmly, place only certain numbers, and let each placement narrow the next choice.

Understand the three units

A standard grid has nine rows, nine columns, and nine 3×3 boxes. A number can appear once in each of those units. When you check a blank square, read the row, column, and box together before making a move.

Start with rows or columns that are nearly complete. If only one number is missing and it is not already in the matching box, the placement is certain.

Use a no-guessing routine

First scan for a number that has only one legal home. Next write pencil marks for squares with two or three possible values. Return to the areas changed by each placement; a single number often unlocks the next step.

Practice this routine on an easy puzzle before moving to a harder board. Consistent scanning is more useful than rushing.
