Nonogram Puzzles: Rules, Tips, and a Beginner Tutorial

nonogram puzzles · 6 min read

Nonograms, sometimes called Picross, are picture logic puzzles. Numbers beside each row and column tell you the lengths of filled blocks. Your job is to identify where those blocks can and cannot fit.

Read the clue groups

A clue of 3, 1 means one run of three filled squares, then later a separate run of one. At least one empty square separates distinct runs in the same row or column.

Start with rows where the clues occupy most of the available space. Their overlaps create guaranteed filled squares.

Mark both fills and exclusions

As in Sudoku, clean notes are essential. Mark confirmed empty squares as well as confirmed filled squares. That prevents you from revisiting impossible positions.

Nonograms fit naturally beside Sudoku because both reward patient elimination rather than quick reflexes.
