Sudoku Strategies: From Naked Singles to Advanced Techniques

sudoku strategies · 8 min read

Strong Sudoku solving is a progression of small, explainable techniques. Master the early steps first; advanced techniques make more sense when your candidate notes are clean.

The core strategy ladder

Start with scanning for missing numbers, then naked singles, then hidden singles. Next study pairs: when two cells in the same unit share exactly two candidates, those candidates cannot appear elsewhere in that unit.

The goal is elimination, not memorization. Every strategy should remove uncertainty from a specific row, column, or box.

Move toward expert puzzles

Hard and expert boards often require patterns such as pointing pairs, box-line reduction, and X-Wing. Take one technique at a time and review it on a saved puzzle rather than trying to apply every pattern at once.
